An 18 seat bus that left a motor park in Calabar, Cross Rivers state enroute Enugu was involved in a fatal accident at Biase Local government in Cross Rivers state yesterday morning June 11th. 17 passengers in the bus died instantly while one passenger and the bus driver survived with serious injuries. The Police arrived the scene where they helped to remove the bodies which they deposited at the mortuary. Quite sad! May their souls rest in peace, Amen. See pics from the scene. Why your TV signals are affected by rain...

Adverse weather conditions have been known to affect the quality of the satellite TV signal reception. This is popularly called "rain fade". Usually, when this occurs, it is only for a short period of time. In reality, heavy rains and cloudy conditions can affect television signals enough to result in noticeable degradation of image quality.

In very severe cases, reception can be effectively disrupted. Factors that determine how often this will happen include regional yearly rainfall figure, location in the satellite footprint and height of the satellite above horizon.

While it takes very heavy rain to affect signal reception of a properly aimed and wired satellite home system, still, it can and will occur where the conditions are present.

However, it is more likely to occur more in areas with significant annual rainfall like tropical Africa or South America, especially in countries where rainfall is preceded by dense clouds or accompanied by strong storms. It is less likely in Europe and certain parts of the US. Still, it happens, only less frequently.

The major cause of signal degeneration is satellite wave absorption by the rain drops. There is also some signal scattering, due to deflection of satellite communication between one medium and another or interference between the wave forms produced.

But it is not only rainfall that causes signal degeneration. Very heavy snowing can also affect signal quality, but it is generally less likely to interfere.

Not all satellite signals are affected equally. In general, the longer radio wave, the less affected it is by the "rain fade". Transmission via the longer C-band wavelength is significantly less susceptible to this kind of interference than the one done via the shorter Ku-band (which is used by DStv) or Ka-band.

Also, the farther off central receiving area location, the more pronounced the effect of rain-fade effect is.

Often, susceptibility to rain fade is symptomatic of a less than optimally aimed dish.

Reception quality also can be affected by water or snow/ice accumulating over the surface of a dish receptor. This may result in scatter and less efficient focusing of the satellite signal after its reflection from the dish surface.

Most often, a yearly maintenance of the dish by a qualified maintenance hand will address this.

 In temperate regions of the world, a special dish with built-in heater is used to prevent accumulation of ice.

Rain fade is neither exclusive to Nigeria nor Africa. 

World's first penis transplant recipient to become a father

The South African man who made headlines in March for having the world's first successful penis transplant is to become a father. His girlfriend is said to be 4 months pregnant. His doctor, Professor Andre van der Merwe says this development proves without a doubt that 'the transplant worked'.

The 21 year old recipient, who has not been identified, lost his penis in a botched traditional circumcision three years ago and had the ground-breaking, nine-hour surgery in December 2014.

"This is what we intended, that he should be able to stand up and be able to urinate and have intercourse, so it is a milestone for him," Dr Van der Merwe, head of Stellenbosch University's Division of Urology, told the BBC. He added that he was “very pleased” for his patient that he was to become a father.

Sinkhole spewing fire mysteriously apprears in China

A mysterious sinkhole spewing fire and incredible heat has appeared in a Chinese hillside.

Geologists and media have flocked to the desolate mountain on the outskirts of Urumqi, in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in north-western China, since it appeared a few weeks ago.

 Locals say the mysterious sinkhole could be as a result of improper closure of the mining activities carried out in that area years ago.

A distraught mother has been forced forced to make a heart-breaking decision over which of her desperately ill sons should receive her kidney.

Lian Ronghua was pictured in tears as she prepared to go into the operating theatre, after choosing the younger son, Li Haisong, 24.

Aspiring doctor Li Haiqing, 26, sacrificed his own health by urging his mother to save his sibling according to a report in The People’s Daily Online, saying: ‘We will save little brother first.’

The transplant operation cost the family several thousand yuan, and the men’s father Li Xiukai said they might not be able to afford a second operation if a suitable donor is found for Haiqing.

Both men, from Quanzhou City in the Fujian Province of China, suffered from uremia – a condition that gradually leads to kidney failure – with a kidney transplant offering the only hope of a cure.

The entire family moved to Xiamen last year so that Haiqing could receive dialysis treatment on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while Haisong underwent the same procedure on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The co-pilot of the Germanwings passenger jet locked himself in the cockpit and deliberately flew the plane into the ground killing 150 people, it has been claimed.
Andreas Lubitz, 28, can be heard breathing "normally" as the plane descended around 30,000ft in just eight minutes before crashing into the French Alps.
Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin told today how the flight voice recorder reveals Lubitz and the captain talking in a "normal fashion" for the first 20 minutes after the plane left Barcelona for Dusseldorf.
The captain then tells Lubitz he is leaving the cockpit and he is charge.
But when he returns, Lubitz ignores requests to open the door via the intercom or after he knocks several times.
He then "voluntarily" operated a control which sent the plane into its final, fatal descent.
Mr Robin said Lubitz was not known as a terrorist and there were no grounds to consider the crash as a terrorist incident.
Recordings suggest passengers' screams began just before the final impact, he said.

The investigation into the Germanwings plane which crashed in the French Alps killing all 150 people on board resumes today amid startling new claims about what happened.
Voice recordings from the jet have revealed one of the pilots left the cockpit and could not get back in before the plane went down.
The recordings did not make clear why the pilot left the cockpit or why he could not regain entry as the plane steadily descended toward a mountain range on Tuesday.
Investigators will study the voice recordings from one of the "black boxes" for answers today while the search continued for a second black box.
"The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer," an unnamed investigator told the New York Times.
"And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer."
"You can hear he is trying to smash the door down," the investigator added.

Early analysis of the cockpit voice recorder suggests a male pilot was trying to smash the door down to get back in.
However, there is not yet any indication why he left or what happened to the pilot left in charge of the plane.
A senior military official involved in the investigation described a "very smooth, very cool" conversation between the pilots during the early part of the flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf.
Then the audio indicated that one of the men left the cockpit and could not re-enter.

 Relatives and friends of the 150 victims are due to go to visit the French Alps crash site today.
Lufthansa will operate two special flights - one from Barcelona and one from Dusseldorf - to Marseille, and both groups will travel on by road.
Germanwings chief Thomas Winkelmann said 72 passengers were German citizens, including 16 pupils returning from an exchange trip.
Spain said 51 of the dead were Spanish.
The three British victims were dad of two Martyn Matthews, 50, hotel management student Paul Bramley, 28 from Hull, and Marina Bandres, who lived with her family in Rochdale.
Other victims were from Australia, Argentina, Iran, Venezuela, the US, the Netherlands, Colombia, Mexico, Japan, Denmark and Israel.

Can a pilot be locked out of the cockpit?

The revelations from the voice recorder overnight has sparked speculation about access to the cockpit of a passenger jet.
According to the Airbus cockpit access video above, in the scenario that both pilots become incapacitated, there is an emergency code which staff can use.
This sounds a warning alarm in the cockpit before releasing the lock for five seconds.
However, an Australian pilot, who has flown the Airbus A320, has said it is possible for a person inside the cockpit to 'block' emergency access.
The pilot, who has not been named, told the Sydney Morning Herald a pilot could stop his co-pilot accessing the cockpit if he reacts quickly enough.
"If the person on the other side of the door says 'no', you can't get in," the Australian pilot said.

Tougher rules on cockpit security were brought in in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
In 2003 the US Federal Aviation Administration brought in new rules that meant pilots flying in the US would have some of the toughest cockpit doors in the world.
Each door cost up to £33,000 and could withstand "small-arms fire or fragmentation devices, such as grenades". Nearly 6,000 planes had to have the doors installed.
Similar rules are replicated across the world, but it's unclear exactly what security system Flight 4U9525 had - and experts are unwilling to give terrorists any tips.

Evidence is starting to suggest a pilot could have locked his colleague out of the cockpit and took the Germanwings into a nosedive.
David Kaminski-Morrow, air transport editor of the Flightglobal publication, said there had been crashes in Mozambique and Japan where something similar had happened.
He said: "Usually the cockpit door locks and to get in you have to have to put in a code, but inside there is a simple switch on the control panel the pilot would turn to lock the door.
"The 2013 plane crash in Mozambique had circumstances where the pilot left the cockpit and couldn't get back in while the guy in the cockpit took the plane into a nosedive."
He went on: "It looks like this incident has precedent at least consistent with that being a possibility. I'm starting to count the number of fatalities that can be attributed to the cockpit doors and whether its locks are saving lives."

Pilots 'involved in violent struggle before crash'

The investigation has now turned into a full-blown criminal enquiry today following revelations of a violent struggle on board, reports from France suggest.
Four specialists from Interpol have joined senior French detectives trying to work out why one of the pilots on the plane locked himself into the cockpit on Tuesday morning.
There were two airmen on board and they are said to have been fighting to open and close the cockpit door.
A chair is at one stage used to block the door, as the pilots shouted at each other in German, before the one outside ‘tried to smash the door down’.
The captain of the Airbus A320 had 6000 flying hours, while his co-pilot had just 600 and had only joined Germanwings, the Lufthansa affiliate, in 2013. It is not known which one was locked in the cockpit.
The revelations open up the possibility of a rogue pilot deliberately flying the plane into the French Alps and so murdering everyone on board. 
Such possibilities – including a terrorist theory – are being considered by Brice Robin, the Marseille Prosecutor, who has opened a criminal enquiry.
Cockpit recordings recovered from the crash site indicated one of the seats was pushed back and the door opened and closed, followed by the sound of knocking on the flight, which had been on its way from Barcelona in Spain to Dusseldorf in Germany.
‘There was no more conversation from that point until the crash,’ said a military source linked to a parallel technical enquiry by BEA, the French crash investigators, who are currently investigating the boxes in Le Bourget, near Paris.

 The Airbus A320 suddenly began a fatal eight-minute descent shortly after reaching cruising altitude.
No distress signal was sent and the crew failed to respond to desperate attempts at contact from ground control.
Interpol, the international criminal police organisation, today confirmed that it has sent a team of experts to assist with the enquiry at the request of the French enquiries.
Four Interpol officers will initially be based with a crisis cell being coordinated from Paris.
Jurgen Stock, head of Interpol, said: ‘Interpol is committed to providing all the support required by countries hit by this tragic accident’
At least three Britons, 51 Spaniards and 72 Germans – including two babies and 16 school children - died in the so far unexplained crash of the Airbus.
BEA spokesman Remi Jouty confirmed voices were audible on the damaged black box voice recorder.
"We succeeded in getting an audio file which has usable sounds and voices.  We haven’t fully understood it all yet," said Mr Jouty.

A Domino’s Pizza chief was hit on the head with a metal bar amid a theft in Arizona that was gotten on reconnaissance cam.

Jody Thompson, the director, is seen being hit on the back of his head with the bar as the criminal requests the greater part of the cash from inside the Phoenix store on Tuesday night.

He survived the hit to his head which left both swelling and a scar, as police have discharged the footage trying to help find the theft suspect.

The suspect, who is depicted as a 5’10’ tall dark man in his mid 20s, fled the scene after he was given an obscure measure of money from the register.

In the feature, the suspect is seen around 10.30pm requesting Thompson to issue him money.

They trade words before the director focuses and strolls towards the safe.

He is then hit over the head with the metal bar by the man as he is attempting to open the safe.

‘To begin with thing he says ‘issue me your cash, issue me your money’, I let him know the safe was time postponed, he says you’re lying, I curved down to do it and that is the point at which he popped me on the head,’ said Thompson.

High-Protein Diet May Cause Colon Cancer

The high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets many people turn to for weight loss might have potentially harmful long-term effects on the colon, a small study hints.In a study of 17 obese men, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carb diet created certain changes in the colon that could, over time, contribute to colon cancer risk

                         

                    

                       

The study looked only at short-term shifts in certain compounds that are byproducts of bolism, and not actual disease risk. So it does not show whether high-protein diets really raise the risk of any colon diseases


“The concern raised by our studies is that the risk of colorectal cancer might be raised by long-term adherence to diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrate, especially fiber,” senior researcher Dr. Harry J. Flint, of the University of Aberdeen, told an international wire

So what does that mean for people who want to lose weight?Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been shown to help heavy people shed pounds. And, Flint and his colleagues point out, obesity is thought to be a risk factor for a number of diseases, including colon cancer.People should not be discouraged from losing weight, as this offers important health benefits,” Flint said

However, he added, they should make sure that any weight loss plan they follow includes adequate amounts of fiber. People should also be aware, Flint said, that a high protein intake over months to years might have ill effects in the colon

The findings are based on 17 obese men who each followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan designed to maintain their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with moderate amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week high-protein diet low in carbs.On average, the study found, when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of substances known as N-nitroso compounds, and certain other bolites that have been linked to cancer.Daily Capital

The partial solar eclipse will be visible to Britons around 11am tomorrow morning

Many Britons may not enjoy the partial solar eclipse tomorrow as cloudy conditions cover the United Kingdom.

Those in central England will have best chance of seeing the partial eclipse, the Met Office has predicted, with cloud across much of the rest of the UK.
Generally speaking there is going to be a lot of cloud tomorrow. The best chance for a break in the cloud will be in central England, where the cloud will be at its thinnest,” a Met Office spokesperson told The Independent.
“That’s not to say there won’t be cloud there and not to say there won’t be breaks elsewhere,” they continued.

Still, the Met Office is predicting that the south-east corner will be wrapped under low cloud with only a small chance of it breaking for the 10 minutes that it will be possible to see the partial eclipse.
A cold weather front, pushing in across the north of the country, and combined with “extensive cloud cover” mean that Scottish residents may not be lucky enough to see the eclipse.
Wales and most of Ireland are also predicted to be under heavy skies, obscuring the partial eclipse.

24yr old Harnaam Kaur, who lives in Berkshire, UK, and suffers from what doctors calls polycystic ovary syndrome (facial hair growth in women) says she now loves her beards and have stopped trying to get rid of it. Harnaam said she started growing the beards when she was just 11 years old and had to endure years of bullying and people making fun of her.
                                        

Harnaam, who once attempted suicide, had in the past tried to wax, bleach and shave the hair which also started growing on her chest and arms but finally decided to stop after being baptised as a Sikh, a religion that forbids the cutting of body hair. She's now speaking up about her new-found confidence.
                                      

Speaking during an appearance on This Morning, Harnaam said:

"At the end of the day, I love myself and the way that I'm formed. Going through primary and secondary school with the facial hair, kids can be nasty. It led me to self harm and wanting to take my own life. It takes a lot of strength to say, 'I want to kill myself. A split second is all it took. That thought process really empowered me to just carry on with life.

"I'm more spiritual now than I am religious, I live my life the way I see fit. I stand for what I am. To be labelled as a woman you can look however you want."

Harnaam is now working on a campaign to show that name-calling has a big impact with anti-bullying charity Fixers and appears in a short film with her brother.

Netanyahu claims victory as main rival concedes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed victory Wednesday after a bitter election and last-minute declarations to boost his party’s low opinion poll numbers.
With 99% of the votes counted, his Likud party grabbed at least 29 of the 120 seats in Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, according to unofficial numbers from the Israeli election committee.

Its main rival, the Zionist Union alliance, got at least 24 seats, the committee said.
Netanyahu’s road to victory was bumpy, with the final results a far cry from experts’ predictions.
For weeks, his party was lagging in various opinion polls, prompting Netanyahu to make sharp turns toward the right during the final days of the campaign.
Days before the election, he said there would be no Palestinian state under him.
He also said Israeli Arabs were voting in large numbers, urging his supporters to head to the polls.
Netanyahu released a video Tuesday on his Facebook page urging his supporters to vote. He suggested that leftists are bringing “huge amounts” of Israel’s Arab citizens to the polls to vote against his Likud party.
“The right regime is in danger, the Arab voters are coming in huge amounts to the polls,” Netanyahu said. “The leftists are bringing them (Arabs) in huge amounts to polls using buses.”
Arabs make up about 20% of Israel’s population. According to the early exit poll estimates, an Arab coalition ranked as the third largest party.
Netanyahu’s turnaround appeared to have boosted his Likud base and attracted voters from right-wing parties.
Some polls had put his party in second place behind the Zionist Union, while others predicted the two would be tied neck and neck.
“He seems to have energized that right-wing base … even inching a little bit ahead of him,” CNN’s Elise Labott said.
Pollster Avi Degani, who predicted a Likud victory all along, said other pollsters relied too heavily on Internet technology.
“More of the sampling needed to be done by telephone,” he said.
“The Internet does not represent the state of Israel and the people of Israel,” Degani said, referring to modern statistical methods.
“It represents panels, and the panels are biased strongly to the center.”
As Netanyahu’s win reverberates, the main question remains: Did he gain extra seats because of an 11th-hour surge, or were the major polls skewed from the beginning?

A drug smuggler was caught carrying £180,000 of cocaine stuffed in her huge 46D bra.

Nola Williams, 47, was found with the stash after she arrived at Gatwick on a BA flight from Kingston, Jamaica, with a child and accomplice Raymond Goodison in January last year.

But despite being on licence for a previous jail sentence for drugs, Goodison was bailed and has since fled the country.

The pair were arrested as they boarded a train from the airport to Victoria station in central London.

A strip search revealed a kilogram of cocaine stitched into the cups of Williams' bra.

Goodison had used the woman as a 'mule' the court heard, as he was sentenced to 13 years in his absence. It is believed that he may now be in Jamaica or the US.

He was convicted of smuggling cocaine while Williams pleaded guilty to the same charge.
